We believe that every child should have an effective means of communication.

As each waking moment is a learning opportunity, communication happens in all situations and communication underpins all learning. So we use a Total Communication approach, which means we encourage a combination of communications methods, whether they use speech, sign language, low tech aids or high tech communication aids such as eye gaze technology.

This approach ensures that our pupils can communicate with the people around them in the way that best suits them. For example, a child may receive information via speech and signs and express themselves through vocalisations and symbols.


How we help each child

Our Speech and Language Therapists provide individual or group sessions and support and modelling in the classroom to help the children:

  • understand language
  • express themselves
  • navigate the social use of language

They also provide input into the class curriculum.
